Learning to write: the Vere Foster copybooks

Vere Foster was an educationalist and philanthropist who produced a popular series of writing copy books:

A Vere Foster copy book for lettering. The motto along the bottom reads, "A nation's greatness depends upon the education of its people."

The border contains the rose, thistle and shamrock - the symbols of England, Scotland and Ireland. There is no daffodil or other symbol for Wales as Wales was officially part of England. The Union flag works the same way combining the component flags of England, Scotland and Ireland, but not Wales.
