The North West Film Archive

The North West Film Archive is a part of the Library Service of the Manchester Metropolitan University. It is Britain's largest public collection outside London. The Archive was set up in 1977 and is the professionally recognised home for moving images made in or about Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire. The region's position at the forefront of industrialisation is reflected in the Archive's Collection which is a powerful record of modern urban society.

Moving History is an online guide to the UK's public sector moving image archives, designed to encourage the use of such archives for scholarly research. It has been produced for the AHRB Centre for British Film and Television Studies by the South East Film & Video Archive. The site contains 100 film clips, arranged by archive or by theme, in-depth descriptions of the archives, and guidelines for researchers. The themes include Arts and Culture, Coastal and Waterways, Drama and Entertainment, Family Life, Gender and Cultural Diversity, Industry, Leisure, Rural Life and Urban Life. The clips are available in high, medium and low bit rates, and require Windows Media Player.
