::Is it OK to record and show programmes from channels such as 'Discovery' and 'The History Channel'? Short answer is Yes - as long as it a UK-based broadcast and even though they are not on the ERA list. long explanation coming soon
This page is being launched through the SWGfL 2008 Conference, and records some of the questions and discussion at the two 'Copyright/Copywrong' seminars in Torquay and Bristol. We are adding questions and the ensuing discussion as we go and as we are able to check some of the points arising with expert sources. Pupils and teachers should be confident in their use of resources within learning activity and the support provided by "fair dealing" and "education exceptions" should help to accommodate these needs.
This of course does not mean that copyright intentions are ignored and teachers need to be aware of the differences between on-going learning and the storing and distribution of resources to a wider school or public community. It is hoped that current legislation development (ensuing from the 'Gowers Review') may recognise the place of IWB systems and VLEs in schools in the near future creating a wider environment for 'unimpeded' learning. Such changes could alter some of the points made in the commentaries below....but we'll have to wait and see
