Why are you looking at us?

These children have been asked to display the numbers tattooed on their arms when they were released from one of the Auschwitz camps. The image taken in 1945, is from a news film made in 1965 and now in the British Pathe Archive.
The film goes on to tell the story of another young orphaned survivor, Anya Koval, who has her tattoo removed and is cared for by stepparents in Kiev (now 'Kyiv'), the capital of the Ukraine. The film then shows her some years later - as a 17 year-old and then again, in 1965, as a 24 year-old at work in Kiev's Science Academy.

How can we bear to look? ~ How can we dare not to?

The question for the viewer was the same for the cameramen: "How can I bear to take these films? How can I dare not witness the scene in front of me?" And for the cinema and newspaper editor; "How can I bear to show these images? How can I dare to hide them?"
Despite the deluge of images and reports of war, famine, disaster and inhumanity that we see daily in the media many of the 60 year-old, black and white films in the Archive - remain distressing and deeply moving. They reach across time; we meet their gaze; they touch us... what have we to say in return?

Take some care!

Take Care - safety issues! The subject of the Holocaust is universal and there are resources in the British Pathe Archive which can, selectively, be used with children of any age. Teachers should be aware that many of the films witness and record the suffering and death of people and many images are extremely disturbing and upsetting.
