21st Century British Pathé - the Blog

Tomorrow's news yesterday ... Films from the British Pathé archive and photographs and film from other on-line archives that schools can use. The little articles are in date order - going backwards - we add new stuff to earlier stories from time to time.
We're now into our sixth year of stories based on anniversaries, notable dates and connections and is fast becoming a little archive in itself!

Tolstoy: anniversary of his death, November 2010

Archive film of Tolstoy. Great little black and white film from British Pathe archive showing Tolstoy and his wife walking in their garden (about 1908) edited with film shot in 1935 showing the rooms in the house and his simple grave. Narration and music make a nice mini-documentary. In the Footsteps of Tolstoi. Also 1948 silent clips of Tolstoy's sister, Tatiana, with some of his books, letters and photographs, Countess Tolstoy in Rome These are direct links to play the films on the British Pathe wesbite
:: About Tolstoy - Wikipedia version of life and works is a bit, well bitty.
:: Feature Film The story of Tolstoy's relationship with his wife is the central theme of the film 'The Last Station' (2009)
:: Photo Gallery Tolstoy Studies Journal has an online Image Library with photographs of Tolstoy throughout his life and, in the sprit of Tolstoy himself, makes them free for us to use. How is this possible? Because Russia did not sign international copyright agreements until after 1960 when the book these photographs are taken from was published in Russia. There is also a vast filmography; all good stuff!

The Beatles are in the news again!

The Beatles are in the news (yet) again! Appearing in a digital game no less; and with a new compilation CD of the greatest hits; and lots of chatter about how the doyens of sixties youth freedom became smothered in the corporate wrangles of today. We've listed 46 news films from the British Pathe film archive here. Note: Some films have 'Media Not Available' on them - presumably for copyright reasons - we've included two but if you search 'Beatles' you'll find some others. Searching 'sixties', 'pop music' or by date will provide other related material. There a good 'Review of the Sixties' to provide general context; deaths of Winston Churchill, President Kennedy and Martin Luther-King; riots in Grosvener Square; while one man sails round the world and another lands on the moon the four Beatles are the stars of the decade.

"The Loud Silence": 7th July 2005

One witness of the 7/7 London Bombings described the strangeness of the soundscape on the streets after events. You could hear the usual noise of traffic in the distance and the sounds of the rescue services close up but the 'loudest' thing was the silence of people in the vicinity..."a loud silence". In this way, they thought, it contrasted with 9/11 and New York where everything was noise. BBC recording

The 'Vespa' is 60 years old: 23rd April 1946

After the Second World War, the Piaggo Company of Italy set about the task of producing a lightweight vehicle at a low cost. The first design was a scooter based on a small motorcycle made for parachutists in the war. The prototype, known as the MP 5, was nicknamed “Paperino” (Italian for Donald Duck!); it wasn't successful...quack, quack. The second product, based on aircraft design, by the engineer Corradino D'Ascanio was christened the "Wasp" or, in Italian, Vespa. Sixty years later millions have been sold around the world and the Vespa maintains it status as a fashion icon; ..........................................
